"I'll Never Love Again" is a vocal from the 2018 film A Star Is Born, performed by its stars Lady Gaga and director Bradley Cooper whose character sings the concluding chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the vocal including the extended version that featured Gaga equally the sole performer. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere. Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

The vocal has received widespread critical acclaim and has reached the tiptop of the Slovakian digital charts, the top-10 of the record charts in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the digital charts of Greece, combined-Europe, Luxembourg and Spain. "I'll Never Love Once more" received a gimmicky hit radio release in French republic as the album's tertiary single on May 27, 2019. It won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media, a year later on the album's lead single "Shallow" won in the same category.

Background and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting ready to film the concluding scene of A Star Is Born, where she sings "I'll Never Dear Again", the vocaliser got a telephone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her last moments of Stage IV cancer. Gaga left the fix and drove to meet Durham, but she arrived ten minutes after her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should return to filming; he replied, "You've gotta practice what Sonja would desire y'all to practise", so she returned to the gear up. Co-star and director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga'south loss but Gaga was determined well-nigh finishing the scene, and so she stepped on the set and sang "I'll Never Love Again". The singer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic souvenir that day and I took it with me to [the] set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same solar day inside an hour."[1]

Forth with the film version, the soundtrack as well contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the vocal with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[2] [3] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[4] The vocal is performed in the fundamental of G major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in mutual time. It follows a chord progression of Gadd2–Em7–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Gadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/East–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga'southward vocals span from G3 to Ev.[5] Brian Truitt of Us Today described the song as a "weepy" ballad.[6]

Release and functioning [edit]

The song was first chosen every bit the third single from the soundtrack on May 27, 2019 in France, where it was serviced to gimmicky hit radio stations.[7] After soundtrack release, the vocal debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart in the United States[eight] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the state, while accumulating 66 million streams.[9] Additionally, the song has reached the top 10 position in Hungary, Republic of ireland and Scotland, and the top 10 of digital charts in Hellenic republic, Espana and Grand duchy of luxembourg, reaching the nautical chart acme in Slovakia.

Critical reception [edit]

The vocal received universal acclaim. In her review of the film, Melina Newman of Billboard chosen the ballad "stunning".[10] The magazine'due south Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's functioning of "I'll Never Love Once again" as the film'south best scene and wrote, "Non only are the lyrics devastatingly beautiful, simply Gaga/Marry showcases her full, skyscraper-high range."[11] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson's "Without Y'all" and Eric Carmen's "All by Myself", and complimented Gaga'southward "old-school finesse, timing, emotionality and lung power".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice called the song a "stunning, heart-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Love Again' is plenty effective on its ain, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its terminal seconds the same way the motion picture does: jumping dorsum in fourth dimension from Gaga's time-stopping performance to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that but enhances the vocal's emotional quotient".[13]

In his film review, Ty Burr of The Boston Globe said Gaga'due south "climactic memorial" performance of the song "will leave you a soggy mess whether you similar it or not".[14] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.[xv] Us Today 'southward Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Love Once again,' the film's devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her own Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about love and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. Information technology'south a transcendent accomplishment that could single-handedly net the vocaliser-turned-extra her get-go Oscar, reminding u.s. yet again that she's 1 of the best vocalists right at present in any genre, pop or otherwise."[16]
